Mr Hassan Suleiman, a university lecturer, said the peaceful conduct of the United States midterm elections offers important lessons for Nigeria.
He noted that the election, which saw the Democratic Party gain control of Congress from the Republican Party, was free from violence and post-election disputes.
The election achieved several historic milestones, including Abdul El-Sayed becoming the first Muslim U.S. Senator from Michigan, James Talarico becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate seat in Texas since 1988, and Gina Hinojosa becoming the first Black woman governor of Texas. Candidates from various parties conceded defeat and congratulated the winners.
Suleiman emphasised that opponents’ willingness to accept defeat and congratulate winners is a key lesson for Nigerian politicians in future elections.
“Politics is a game, and every political actor must understand that winning and losing are part of the democratic process.”
“Losing an election should not result in bitterness, hostility or attempts to undermine the system”, he said.
Suleiman urged Nigerian politicians to avoid treating elections as a do-or-die affair and to embrace sHe stated that democracy cannot thrive in an environment of rancour, bitterness, and political hostility.
“Politicians should learn to congratulate their opponents when they win and maintain friendly relationships even when they belong to different political parties,” he said.
He also advised public office holders to view their positions as a call to service rather than an opportunity for personal gain.
“Those elected into public offices should justify the confidence reposed in them by delivering good governance, improving the welfare of citizens and fulfilling their campaign promise,” he said.
He noted that political power is temporary and leaders should demonstrate humility while in office.
“Power ultimately belongs to God, who gives it to whoever He chooses.”
Therefore, politicians should not allow the pursuit of political positions to create unnecessary divisions, hatred and animosity among the people,” he said.
Suleiman encouraged political parties, candidates, and their supporters to prioritise national development, peaceful coexistence, and stronger democratic institutions.
