Domestic Violence: Tietie Enlightens Healthgarde Members at Abuja Meet

Health Garde International, a multilevel marketing company on Saturday 21st of May hosted Frank Tietie, a human rights lawyer, and the Executive Director of Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights (CASER) as a guest speaker to enlighten its members and distributors on the twin issues of domestic violence and gender inequality.

The event which was held at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja featured an electronic presentation by Tietie on the position of the law on the trending issues of domestic violence and gender inequality and, how they adversely affect society, particularly the well-being of women and children.

The Guest Speaker, Frank Tietie Human Rights Lawyer and Executive Director, Citizens Advocacy for Social & Economic Rights (CASER)

Tietie gave a graphic analysis of some of the salient provisions of the Violence Against Person (Prohibition) Act of 2015 and urged the audience, who were mostly women not to tolerate the slightest form of violence against them by anybody however highly or lowly placed.

Forms of violence in the Act that were highlighted in course of the presentation included:

        • Rape
        • Inflicting Physical Injury on a Person
        • Coercion
        • Wilfully Placing a Person in Fear of Physical Injury
        • Offensive Conduct
        • Female Circumcision or Genital Mutilation
        • Forceful Ejection from Home
        • Depriving a Person of His or Her Liberty
        • Damage to Property with Intent to Cause Distress
        • Forced Financial Dependence or Economic Abuse
        • Forced Isolation or Separation from Family and Friends
        • Emotional, Verbal and Psychological Abuse
        • Harmful Widowhood Practices
        • Abandonment of Spouse, Children, and other Dependents without Sustenance
        • Stalking
        • Intimidation
        • Spousal Battery
        • Harmful Traditional Practices
        • Attack with Harmful Substances
        • Administering a Substances with Intent
        • Incest and
        • Indecent Exposure

The electronic presentation was thereafter followed by an interactive session where Tietie answered a wide range of questions from the participants.
