In an unprecedented class action instituted by a list of senior lawyers and former chairmen of the Ughelli Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, much succour has come to the residents of Ughelli, particularly and the entire Edo-Delta area who had been suffering excruciating exploitation by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) through the adoption of crazy electricity billings in the name of estimated billing.
In a landmark judgment, the Court held among other reliefs granted that exorbitant and estimated billing on the resident of Ughelli is wrongful. The Court went further to hold thaT the cp for estimated billing is N8,000.00 (Eight Thousand Naira Only) and that BEDC can no longer disconnect the electricity of any of the residents of Ughelli without compliance to Schedule 1 of Order NO/NERC/211/2020.
Encomiums continue to greet Pastor Emmanuel Jewo, Joseph Ogedegbe, Esq. Sunny Asanuvwie, ES. Ayo-Okhiria, Esq and all the members of the Ughelli Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association for the courageous move to sue BEDC in a Delta State High Court sitting at Ughelli, as claimants for themselves and members of the Ughelli Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association. In addition, Lady Patience Ajeoyibo and Mr Jonathan Ubogun also joined the suit as Claimants for themselves and numerous interested residents of Ughelli Town and environs. Many residents describe their actions as heroic and meant to deliver them from the hardship and oppression in the hands of BEDC which hands arbitrarily high bills to them on an estimated basis.
An excited resident of Ughelli simply known as Cyril has described the lawyers as servants of God and calls on the Ovie (king) of Ughelli to confer special chieftaincy titles on them for their public-spirited acts towards the people of Ughelli.
By this achievement, the Ughelli Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association has earned for itself much respect as the foremost branch in the pursuit and protection of public interest rights.
