70 percent of Nigerians cannot afford legal representation. This ia according to the Director-General of the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria (LACON), Mr. Aliyu Abubakar. He made this statement on Tuesday in Jos during a courtesy visit to Da Gyang Buba, the Gbong Gwom Jos and chairman of the Plateau Traditional Council.

Abubakar noted that many perpetrators of crimes, particularly those facing capital offenses, often lack the financial means to hire a legal practitioner of their choice. He emphasized that LACON’s mandate is to provide free legal representation for indigent Nigerians.

The D-G visited the palace to inform the royal father about LACON’s plans to inaugurate a Committee of Legal Aid Service Providers in the state, which aims to address some of these challenges.

In response, the Gbong Gwom Jos praised the council for the visit and assured the D-G of the Plateau Traditional Council’s unwavering support. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the D-G is scheduled to inaugurate the committee on Wednesday in Jos.
