Grassroots Advocacy for Peace and Good Governance, a civil society group, has facilitated the release of two inmates in Kebbi.
The inmates, serving separate sentences at Yauri Correctional Centre in Yauri Local Government Area, were released through the efforts of the group’s National Chairman, Mr Usman Anache.
He stated that the organisation’s actions are part of its corporate social responsibility to the public in Kebbi.
“One of the persons granted freedom on Monday was Abubakar Ibrahim, who was serving a nine-year jail term in Yauri prison.
“The group discovered that Abubakar was imprisoned without any formal charge. They followed due process to apply for his release, after which he was reunited with his family.
“Similarly, another inmate, Umar Maune, was convicted after being mistaken for another individual with a similar name who evaded arrest. Before his release, he was serving an eight-year sentence at Yauri prison,” he said.
Anache, on behalf of the organisation, thanked the Kebbi Judiciary for its cooperation and for approving the release requests.
“We are grateful to the Kebbi Chief Judge and members of his team for granting us access to their case files and for agreeing to release them,” he said.
The national chairman also acknowledged the cooperation of the state Correctional Centre Comptroller and the officer-in-charge of Yauri prison throughout the process.
He noted that efforts are ongoing to identify inmates with minor fines or civil offences to facilitate their release.
Anache added that the organisation will continue to support these individuals after their release.
He added that the organisation’s corporate social responsibility cuts across tribes and religion, “because we are not affiliated to any political party or religious organisation, but a platform to push for peace and good governance at all levels.”
