The Kano State Government reports a significant reduction in farmer-herder clashes after demarcating 1,270 kilometres of cattle routes.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr Danjuma Mahmoud, announced this on Tuesday during a briefing on the ministry’s achievements.

Mahmoud stated that the designated routes for livestock movement have reduced conflicts between farmers and herders across the state.

“Regarding farmer-herder clashes, we have achieved significant success.

“Our project established a demarcated cattle route spanning approximately 1,270 kilometres across the state.

“As a result, clashes between farmers and herders have been reduced to a minimum in Kano State,” he said.

The commissioner also stated that the ministry rehabilitated several irrigation facilities to expand farmland and increase agricultural production.

He noted that an assessment of irrigation infrastructure identified urgent needs, especially at major irrigation sites.

The facilities included Jermambaka, Kadawa Farm Centre, Bunkure A and B, alongside several smaller irrigation schemes.

Mahmoud reported that clearing blocked channels and rehabilitating canals restored over 1,200 acres of farmland that had been unusable.

He added that collaboration with the Federal Government and the African Development Bank-supported ATAPS project restored an additional “We are now prepared to distribute these farmlands to our farmers,” he said. farmers,” he said.

Mahmoud also stated that the ministry developed a farmers’ database to determine the number of farmers and monitor crop production.

He said the database would also provide information to support the ministry’s agricultural planning and policy decisions.
