Aisha Abdullahi filed for divorce from her husband, Salisu Muhammad, at the Upper Sharia Court in Rijiyar Zaki, Kano, citing neglect.

The petitioner requested dissolution of the marriage and offered to return half of the bride price her husband paid.

Through her counsel, Abdullahi Sha’aibu-Fagge, the petitioner told the court she was willing to return N50,000, half of the N100,000 bride price, to facilitate the dissolution.

He stated, “The petitioner no longer loves her husband and seeks dissolution of the marriage, which was contracted over a year ago.”

He said the couple had a child together.

When asked about the petitioner’s absence, Shuaibu-Fagge explained that she was at home receiving treatment after allegedly being assaulted by her husband’s relatives.

He added that the incident caused the petitioner’s stitches from a childbirth operation to reopen, preventing her from attending the court session.

The respondent, Muhammad, told the court he would not agree to a divorce unless the petitioner pays N10 million as compensation to enable him to marry another wife.

He also requested an additional N500,000, which he claimed was spent on her wedding clothes.

The petitioner’s counsel rejected this additional demand, noting that his client had already given birth to a child for the respondent.

The presiding judge, Malam Halhalatul Kuza’i-Zakariyya, ordered the respondent to provide a written breakdown of marriage expenses at the next hearing.

He adjourned the matter to November 10 to continue the hearing.
