Court Remands Client over Failure to Settle N100,000 Legal Fees

A Sharia Court in Kaduna has ordered a client, Alhaji Yusha’a Abdullahi to be remanded in the court, on the complaint of a Kaduna-based law firm, Moonlight Attorneys that the client refused to settle the legal fee of N100,000 due to the firm.

At the court hearing, counsel to the complainant, Atiku Abdulra’uf, stated that the defendant had requested service from the complainant, for which an amount was mutually agreed to be paid as a service fee. But after the service had been rendered, the defendant refused to settle the fees in spite of all entreaties, hence the decision by the complainant to approach the court.

“We want this court to assist us to retrieve N100,000 as service fee from Alhaji Yusha’u,” he said.

On his part, the defendant said he knew of the said amount, but needed a ‘discount’ to enable him to settle the same, as soon as practicable.

However, the Judge, Malam Nuhu Falalu, declined to oblige the request for a discount, adding that since the defendant had admitted to owing the service provider, therefore, the N100,000 must be paid to the complainant, on or before April  4.

Consequently, the Court ordered his remand within the Court pending when a reliable surety applies for his bail.
