The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court received 6,727 new cases and resolved 5,625 in the 2025/2026 legal year, according to Chief Judge Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf.
Baba-Yusuf shared this information on Wednesday at the ceremony marking the start of the court’s 2026/2027 legal year.
He noted that the Magistrates’ Courts recorded 23,200 new cases and resolved 19,292 during the same period.
The chief judge described the new legal year as a period for institutional reflection and an opportunity for the judiciary to evaluate its activities.
“For us in the FCT judiciary, every new legal year carries a renewed obligation to serve with integrity, courage, impartiality and diligence.
“It reminds us that behind every case file is a human experience; behind every dispute is an issue that deserves a fair trial and behind every judgment is the responsibility for the constitution, the law and the people of Nigeria,” he said.
He said efforts to improve justice administration and foster a supportive environment in the FCT underscore the need for substantial reforms, not incremental changes.
He explained that this has prompted the judiciary to focus on key policy priorities, including reviewing court rules and practice directions.
He added that other priorities are investing in infrastructure, developing human capital, digitalisation, enhanced case management, and institutional reforms.
He reported that the Abuja Multi-Door Courthouse (AMDC) received 252 new cases and resolved 195 during the previous legal year.
Baba-Yusuf also addressed infrastructural development, capacity building, automation of court operations, and access to justice.
